We began building mountain dulcimers in 1973. We build four and six string models, all of which are handmade in our shop. We do all the work themselves so there are no pre-assembled parts or kits involved. Dan Doty Dulcimers are made from solid wood that is milled on site. All Dan Doty Dulcimers are quality made with attention to every detail.

Construction consists of two piece book matched  top, back, and sides, as well as inlaid fretboards and headstocks. Our dulcimers also feature a  one-half step fret located in the lower and upper octaves. Each dulcimer can be strung for either a left handed or a right handed player.

We began marketing our instruments at local craft fairs and shows. Since 1976 we have worked major exhibits such as, The Tennessee Crafts Fair in Nashville, Tennessee; Silver Dollar City in Branson Missouri; and  Dollywood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.

The mountain dulcimer is widely considered one of the easiest stringed instruments for one to learn how to play.
